Activity 4 - Google Suite

I see my use for google drive in the classroom expanding as I continue to use it. At the moment, I plan to have students practice writing and editing in docs. I will create assessments in google forms that will allow me to check for understanding quicker and in a more efficient way. Google slides is a great way to check for understanding while the students have fun creating presentations. Students can also save screen casts that have been created to show and share.

I see cloud computing as the "future" in many classrooms. This tool will allow for quick and easy feedback for teachers, peers, as well as parents (more on this later). I feel that by setting up correct structure in the classroom, cloud computing will help students organize work and stay responsible with assignments. Cloud computing is going to make collaboration much simpler at school as well as at home.

There are pros as well as cons when discussing google drive and cloud computing in the classroom. While I am excited about the ability of cloud computing in regards to helping my students stay responsible, I am a little concerned that they will begin to rely solely on the cloud to keep track of their work, which will quibble them in the long run. In the real world students will need to have skills to help them keep their work organized. I am not sure if cloud computing will help sharpen those organizational skills. One thing that really excites me about using the cloud in the classroom is the ability of sharing documents. Students not only can share and collaborate with teachers and peers, but now they can share and collaborate with parents. This is a great way to include parents in the classroom experience, which I think is a very cool idea.

  1. I totally agree with you in that cloud computing is the future. Where was this when I was a kid! Collaboration is soooo much easier nowadays! In middle school now, I see over 100 kids a day, so I love being able to pull up their work at home. There just aren't enough hours in the day.

  2. Cloud computing is an amazing way to stay organized, isn't it? It's a great way to communicate and share with students and with each other. Elementary and middle school kids don't have outside access, so they are unable to share docs with an email address outside our district. Teachers can though, or kids can log in at home to show parents their accounts.

  3. So many tools out there. I agree with your comment about student organizational skills. This is painful for some students!
