Activity 2:
I decided to make a PowToon on the topic of text features. This will be the first year I will teach out of a social studies curriculum and thought this would be a great introduction to text features and how to use them when reading non fiction text. I need to practice using this website with a more efficient computer before I decide if I will use this with my students. I did this presentation on my chromebook and it struggled a little bit. If I clicked away from the window that had my PowToon, it would reset and take a little bit to re-load, which often deleted what I was working on. Other then this the website was fairly easy to use and fun to put together.
Text Features PowToon
I like it! The 4th graders should know about text features but this is a fun and engaging way to remind them. This will be their first real experience using a text book so I think anything and everything you can do to help them is awesome.
ReplyDeleteThis turned out great! I'm sorry it was a little frustrating to create on a Chromebook, but the end result was worth it! It will be a great tool to use with your students!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is awesome! I think the kids will love Powtoon, and I I hope we can work as a team to create a library of presentations to support our lessons. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis was a great Powtoon Aaron! Like Gretchen said, the 4th graders should know what text features are...the operative words being "should know" - ha! They know what they're all called, but they need constant reminders to actually USE them. Once quick thing you might want to tweak. Text features and text structure often get confused. In your second slide, you say that text structures are to informational text what story structure is to fiction. That's true, but your Powtoon is on text features and not text structure. Text structure is the way the information is written like cause and effect or problem /solution. So in the fourth grade social studies book there maybe a chapter on why settlers moved west...that would most likely be written in cause and effect text structure, but there will probably be many text features along with it such as maps, bolded words etc. So maybe just tweak that second slide so it doesn't say text structure, but text feature instead. I like Devin's idea of creating a library of presentations to support lessons. We've started to do that in 6th grade at HV.
